Land Use and Cover Changes in Zhangye Oasis, Northwest China
The land use and land cover changes of Zhangye Oasis are studied using two scenes of Landsat TM image acquired in 1987 and 2002. The Oasis locates to the Hexi Corridor of Cansu province, Northwest China. The results show that the ecosystem in Zhangye Oasis deteriorated and desertification became more severe from 1987 to 2002. Farmland and alpine vegetation was fragmentized and diminished, while desert shrub and non-vegetation areas increased. Broadleaf forests increased because of administrative afforestation. From 1987 to 2002, Zhangye Oasis un-derwent a rapid vegetation degradation process. Based on Markov model, it can be predicted that the situation could be exacerbated if there is no effective measures to impede desertifica-tion by 2017.
