A Group Support System for Value Management Studies in Construction Projects
Value Management (VM) is a rigorous, systematic effort to improve the value and optimise the life cycle cost of a facility. Because of its strong potential to increase value for money, client organisations in both the public and private sectors are increasingly using VM in their construction projects. However, the special characteristics of VM workshops in Hong Kong have created some unique problems, which need to be addressed properly to maximise the possible benefits. One way to enhance these workshops is to develop an interactive group support system (GSS) that facilitates the decisionmaking process in VM workshops. This paper introduces a specific GSS prototype system entitled Interactive Value Management System (IVMS), which is designed to improve the implementation of VM workshops in construction. It gives a detailed description of the structure and characteristics of the system and the tools provided in various toolboxes within the system. It is concluded that GSS is a very useful tool in improving VM workshops for construction projects.
