Comparing Material Wastage Levels Between Conventional In-situ and Prefabrication Construction in Hong Kong

Generation of constraclJon wastes consfitutes the major impact to dtc environment,Studies have been directed towards reducing wastes at the various consutracdon processes. However,COllUaorofS in Hong Kong are rather conservative and lack motivation in developing new technology for waste minimizadon. This paper examines the benefits of using prefabricad011 in reducing matcrial wastage Ievcls for some traditional in-sinl wades such as concreting, rebar fixing, bricklaying, drywall, plastering, screeding and tiling in Hong Kong. From the measurement of the thiny conslruction projects.it is found that waste levels of all major construction trades Call be effectively reduced, which is panicularly significant in the wade ofplastering where 100%saving is achieved after adopting prefabrication, The standardized design of the bullding call also be useful in the adopuon of ixcfabricaion for the prirate homing projects.
