The effects of icon size on visual search under motion interference

This study investigated the effects of icon size on the search performance under motion interference. 32 students were recruited for the experiment with a visual search paradigm and 2(stimulus presence: presence, absence) × 3(icon size: small, middle, big) × 3(motion frequency: static, slow, quick) three factor within-subjects repeated measure design. It was found that the size of the icon have a great effect on visual search performance, Icons bigger than 1.3 visual degrees had no significant effects on search times, but Icons smaller than 0.69 visual degrees resulted in significantly raised search times; Result indicated that the motion frequency of the icon also have a great effect on visual search performance, icons’ motion frequency smaller than 1Hz have no significant effects on search times while icons’ motion frequency exceeding 2Hz will result in raised search times.
