Design of an Automatic Globe System for Educational Applications

In order to improve student achievement in science, and enhance geographic information through autonomic learning activities, an automatic globe with voice recognition and touch panel input is described in this paper. By adopting natural technologies for voice recognition, touch panel input response and LCD picture display, the proposed globe system features satisfactory performance in voice recognition and touch panel input response. These technologies were combined into a complete system using AT89C52 as the core. Experiments show that the globe system provides good user experiences. When users speak the name of a country or a continent, the globe model will rotate to the corresponding location and the LCD will show the introduction of that place. The response of the touch panel is swift and the accuracy of voice recognition is more than 90 percent. The human machine interface (HMI) provides a menu which can realize changes between different countries with related information. By taking advantages of the electronic for information sharing and communication, the automatic globe system provides an attractive access to achieving geographic information as well as a new educational idea.
