Effect of heat treatment parameters on microstructural evolution and properties of semi-solid extruded Al-Fe alloy

In this study, heat treatments of T1 and T6 have been applied to Al-Fe alloy after thixoforming to investigate the effects of heat treatment parameters on the microstructures and mechanical properties, and OM (Optical microscope), SEM (scanning electron microscope) and other methods were used. The results indicate that after semi-solid extrusion, the grain sizes are much smaller than those after electromagnetic stirring, but distribute heterogeneously on the matrix; the AI3Fe phase is surrounded by Cu elements, and becomes a slight halo. After T6 heat treatment, more Cu elements accumulate around AI3Fe, which become a visible halo. In addition, grains are coarsening and irregular-shaped, so the mechanical properties of alloy decrease. While after T1 heat treatment, grain size decreases and distributes more homogenously within the matrix. The mechanical properties of the alloy are improved by the precipitates of AI2Cu phases.
