A new riser-design-method using computer simulation

The modulus method and the solidification-based numerical simulation are widely used for riser design in various casting processes. However, it is not a rare experience that the conventional methods of riser design do not work. In this paper, we propose a new method in which both the thermal condition and melt filling conditions are considered. Namely, the new method considers shrinkage porosity formation not only in the casting but also in risers. With demonstrating the new design procedure, how to design a sound riser system is discussed, together with future challenges.
