The determination of thermal diffusivity and heat conduction of ceramic casting molds using computer simulation

Determining the heat transfer coefficients during casting process is very important for measuring the overall performance of process. It can give information about the properties of the metal being cast and its possible behavior in the mold during casting process. Incorrect determination of heat transfer coefficients, and use of incorrect molding materials and casting conditions will lead to such defects as misruns, cold shuts, shrinkage, pin holes, air holes and porosity in final products. A mathematical model was developed by using standard transport equations incorporating all heat transfer coefficients to calculate thermal diffusivity and heat conduction, and computer simulation of the model was carried out to validate the model. The obtained results reveal that the result of simulation is similar to the result of experiment for ceramic mold.
