Effect of A12O3 coated graphite on MgO-C castables for steelmaking application
The poor water wetability and oxidation resistance of graphite have limited the application of graphite in carbon containing refractory castables. In this research, improvement of oxidation resistance and wetability of graphite were studied by using AI2O3 coating. The coating was obtained by hydrolysis of aluminum-nitrate aqueous solution. The coated graphite was used in a ULCC MgO-C castables. The surface of the graphite particles coated with AI2O3 was investigated by XRD and for detail investigation on the surface of coated graphite TEM was used. To investigate the effect of coating on wetability and oxidation resistance of graphite, the coated graphite was applied in a kind of MgO-C castables and the effect of coating on Theological, mechanical and physical properties of MgO-C castables were investigated. Also to characterize the after firing phases XRD was used. The results showed that, AI2O3 was formed on the surface of graphite. Using the coated graphite in castables decreased the water content in castables (to 3.5%). The oxidation resistance of coated graphite and castables with coated graphite improved. The amount of antioxidant required for castables was also decreased.
