Abrasive wear of high manganese cast iron containing spheroidal vanadium carbides

Abrasive wear is a main failure of industrial equipments used in severe wear conditions. Developments of new wear resistant materials are always an urgent subject to be solved. Spheroidal vanadium carbides-containing high manganese cast iron (abbrev. SCI-VMn) was a newly developed material and is widely used as an erosive wear resistant material in industrial equipments such as crusher duct liner, hammer crusher and shock absorbing plate of blast furnace, etc. And SCI-VMn has been expected to have wide application in other wear conditions. This study evaluates the abrasive wear characteristics of SCI-VMn with comparison to some common abrasive wear resistant materials of high chromium white cast irons. The abrasive wear tests were conducted using a Suga abrasion tester mounted silicon carbides abrasives of a P180 grit size with a 19.6 N load. The hardness measurement, the observation of the wear surface by scan electron microscopy and digital microscope were undertaken to analyse the abrasive wear behaviour. The results show that the accumulated wear loss in specimens is increased linearly with the increasing of sliding distance, and the wear loss of SCI-VMn is 1/2 of that of high chromium white cast iron, indicating that not only increasing of hardness by strain induced transformation on the test surface after wear tests but also well bonding of vanadium carbides with matrix contribute to the lower wear loss of SCI-VMn.
