Impact property of inoculated thick walled spheroidal graphite cast iron

The spheroidal graphite cast iron has been used widely as casing material of windmill for wind power generation, and often needs high toughness at low temperature. Due to its high thickness sensitivity, mechanical property of spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD400) is easily affected by parts shapes, especially thickness of parts. In this study, spheroidal graphite cast iron was inoculated and Y-shaped test blocks with thickness of 50 mm, 120 mm, and 150 mm, were manufactured, respectively. And Charpy impact tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical properties. As a result, all specimens show impact value of 10 J or over at low temperature, indicating that inoculation is effective against brittleness at low temperature. 50 mm specimen shows the highest value, and while specimen with 120 mm thick shows the lowest value. From the observation of microstructure and graphite feature of specimens, it also can be seen that graphite nodule counts decrease with increasing of thickness of specimens. In addition, hardness of ferrite matrix in 150 mm is lower than that of others. It suggests that there occurs inoculant fading in thick walled specimens that soften the ferrite matrix, and then low temperature brittleness is improved effectively.
