Application of ultrasonic irradiation in as-cast ZA27 alloy

The ZA27 alloy melt in the clay-graphite crucible was treated with strong ultrasonic irradiation during the solidification. The effects of ultrasonic irradiation power on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZA27 zinc-based alloy were investigated by OM, SEM material tester and MRH-01A block-on-ring test machine. The results show that the microstructure and mechanical properties are improved after the ultrasonic irradiation. The best results optimizing the microstructure and mechanical properties were obtained with the ultrasonic irradiation power of 1,500 W and irradiation duration of 120 s. The cavitation and acoustic streaming caused by ultrasonic irradiation play a major role in refining the microstructure and increasing mechanical properties of the ZA27 alloy.
