A novel fading-resistant A1-3B grain refiner for Al-Si alloys

A novel, fading-resistant AI-3B refiner containing AIB12 particles was produced via the halide salt route by reacting compacted KBF4 block with molten aluminum at 950°C. The result of grain refinement test on AI-7Si alloy shows that rejuvenation of refining efficiency occurs between 30 to 60 minutes with 1.0wt.% addition level. The presence of AIB12 in the refiner is responsible for the capability of fading-resistance.
