INFLUENCE OF COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION ON THE FRETTING STRESSES

Finite element simulation is an effective tool to understand the contact and fretting behavior of practical mechanical joints, such as a lug and bush joint.A linear-elastic finite element model using ABAQUSR has been developed to study the fretting stresses for cylinder-on-flat and cylinder-oncylinder geometries having similar material contacts. The effect of fretting parameters, such as contact geometry, bulk tension applied on the side of the specimen, coefficient of friction, the normal force applied on the top of the pad and tangential force applied are investigated. The computed local stresses at the contact region are used to explain possible crack initiation location under elastic deformation condition.
