PERFORMANCE TESTING AND OPTIMAL DESIGN OF SKIN EFFECT CURRENT TRACING IN OIL PIPELINES

Based on analysis of the various widely used electrical heat tracing methods in viscous oil pipelines, the Skin Effect Current Tracing (SECT) is proposed to heat the long-distance oil pipeline for its advantages. In order to optimal design SECT and to provide guidance for the actual pipeline constructions, this paper builds a 120m simulative SECT oil pipeline to systemically test its heating performances on different sections and diameters, and testing of the drain voltage on the oil pipeline is then carried out.The experimental results show that when applying such technology in the practical oil pipeline constructions, 3/4 inch inner SECT heating pipe is the best choice for its large resistance, high heating efficiency, small construction difficulty and safe level of drain voltage.
