SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CARBOXYMETHYL CHITOSAN BASED HYBRID BIOPOLYMER SCAFFOLD

Current tissue engineering strategies are focused on the restoration of pathologically altered tissue architecture by transplantation of cells in combination with supportive scaffolds and biomolecules.Biodegradable polymers and bioactive ceramics are being combined in a variety of composite materials for tissue engineering scaffolds.A scaffold is an artificial structure capable of supporting three dimensional tissue formation which mimics like extracellular matrix. Here we report on the development of a biodegradable scaffold made from naturally derived chitosan along with some anionic polymer like gelatin, alginate, hyaluronic acid etc. While the natural polymer chitosan imparts its unique properties of biodegradability, antifungal nature, nontoxicity, biocompatibility.the anionic polymers due to bonding with chitosan not only contribute to enhanced mechanical strength but also increased biocompatibility. This paper investigates the right combination of desired properties like enhanced mechanical properties and biocompatibility in scaffold because of composite nature.
