Superplastic forming of AZ31 magnesium alloy using resistance heating

Superplastic forming using resistance heating (SPFRH) is developed to solve the problems of high energy consumption and low efficiency. In this process, the sheet is connected in series with a high current circuit and heated directly by the electrical resistance. The heating rate of the sheet is controlled by current density, and the ceramics mould is employed to avoid the heating current being dispersed. The applicability of resistance heating to superplastic forming is evaluated by the heating and forming experiments, and the AZ3I magnesium alloy samples are formed successfully. By this method, the superplastic forming with the merits of high efficiency and low energy consumption becomes possible.
