Gasification and Combustion Characteristics of Datong Coal in a Mixture of O2/CO2 and Recycled Flue Gas by Rapid Heating

A novel combustion technology for coal fired power plants has been developed by oxy-fuel combustion that uses gasification and combustion of pulverized coal in mainly CO2 gas flow. In this study, a high power laser beam was used to carry out experiments of rapid heating of crushed coal in a CO2-rich atmosphere with different O2 concentrations (<10%). The effects on generating CO and Hydrocarbons (HCs) have been discussed by changing laser power, O2 concentration and placing water droplets on the coal sample. The results of experiments show that coal weight reduction ratios in the CO2-rich atmosphere by the rapid heating were decreased by adding water of 30% against the total weight. Generations of CO and HCs gases are mainly dependent on coal temperature and O2 concentration; however, those are also affected by placing water droplets for enhancing chemical reactions with H2O vapor.
