Geochemical Investigation of Groundwaters of Shallow Coastal Aquifer in and Around Lome
The quantities of chemical components in groundwater samples were determined and submitted to statistical analysis. The majority of the samples contained high concentrations of Na (37-1430 mg/L) and Cl (60.06- 2682.94 mg/L) (Na-CI water type), indicate the intrusion of salt water into the groundwater. The samples also contained high concentrations of NO3 (0.4-377 mg/L), which is a serious water quality issue. This nitrate originates from the soil surface and enters the groundwater by infiltration. The high content of these chemical components, which has disadvantage on drinking water, proves the giving up of the boreholes by the population. Multivariate statistical techniques used in this study were enable to identify the key parameters which describe groundwater quality and to characterize the spatial variability of groundwater quality data.
