A Simple Method for Synthesis of a-Fe Nanoparticles in Ordered Mesoporous Silica

A simple method for in situ synthesis of a-Fe nanoparticles in ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) matrix is presented. Well dispersed a-Fe nanoparticles in OMS were directly obtained by evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) process and subsequent carbothermal treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere. The main strategy of this approach is to use E020P070EO20 (P123) as not only a template for assembly of mesostructure in the EISA process but also a reactive agent for reducing ferric species to a-Fe nanoparticles in subsequent carbothermal treatment process. The amphiphilic triblock copolymer P123 plays essential roles in this method. The synthesized composites with Fe/Si molar ratio ranging from 0.05 to 0.2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 adsorption. Characterization revealed carbothermal treatment of the composite at 800°C gave highly dispersed a-Fe nanoparticles in hexagonal OMS matrix.
