A WEB based framework to face issue of marine water vulnerability

Scientific portals are key components of many large-scale Earth Science projects. Through the integration of user-friendly web interfaces within the same environment, researchers and scientists can securely and transparently access to data and computational infrastructures, services, applications, etc. Such web environments provide centric gateways to applications based on workflow and dataflow services and a strong support in accessing to quality information. This paper will focus on the choices and challenges made in the development of a CIS oriented Collaborative Working Environment (CWE) on the web, optimized for the environmental sciences. This paper will detail the realizable benefits from moving a traditional approach to a web based paradigm. In details, the CWE environment exposes a development framework and interactive, innovative applications based on hydrological and oceanographic models. Enlarged interdisciplinary groups have developed the web applications exploiting a fast and flexible processing system (Wiki like) for service management making the programming features available to developers with almost-zero learning curve. Within this experimental programming environment, we are developing modules to run real-time applications based on numerical solvers, run pre- and postprocessing codes, query and map results through the web browser. We expect to simplify the development of environmental applications for report making, and to improve environmental model usability. To illustrate the potentiality of the system, we present its application to a regional test case located in Sardinia (Italy).
