Hierachy of User Needs: An Analysis of Mobile Phone Innovation
The purpose of this research was to develop a model of mobile phone innovation in relation with user needs. The model, built from observations and analysis of mobile phone evolution from the first generation (1G) to fourth generation (4G) of mobile technologies, suggests that mobile phone innovation parallels with a hierarchy of user needs- deficiency, functional, experiential and aesthetic, and personalized. Linking innovation of mobile phone and these needs provide deeper understanding of its transition from product centered to user focus. Further application of this model can help consumer analysis and future innovation to fulfill the needs of potential users.
