The analysis of carrying capacity of tourism foreign direct invesement in south coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania
The growth of foreign centric tourism in the South Coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania in the last 15 years raises obvious questions about its role in economic and socio-environmental wellbeing of the area. These questions include: to what extent is tourism FDIs contributing to the deterioration of local economic livelihoods and socio-environmental welfare of the inhabitants? This paper argues that South Coast of Zanzibar can successfully practice the sustainable development strategies and alleviate the existing extreme poverty, if foreign supply(s) chain of tourism development follows the principles of carrying capacity. Thus, Zanzibar should be the home for quality medium scale tourism enterprises, rather than being a land of large scale and enclave tourism development.
