Resist block pollution attack in BitTorrent-like peer-to-peer networks

Though Peer-to-Peer file sharing applications have been widely adopted for content dissemination in the internet., their openness and anonymous characters make them vulnerable to several serious security threats. This paper mainly focus on the block pollution attack over BitTorrent-like peer-to-peer networks. We analyze the principles of block pollution attacks and make a real world evaluation of the attacking impact under the WAN. We find that the block pollution attack can significantly damage the dissemination services of the target resource sharing swarm. To resist the block pollution attack, this paper gives a novel counter measure by enhancing the robustness of BitTorrent content integrity checking method. This approach is backward and forward compatible. Through simulation experiments we evaluate our method, and the results indicate that the method is effective and feasible.
