Multi-angle Development of Computer-facilitated System for Distinguishing Near-synonyms of PA Verbs
In recent years, more and more people are learning Chinese and more and more researchers are carrying out Chinese studies on word semantic analysis from different aspects and have got a lot of fruitful results. When differentiating near-synonyms of a class of words, cognitive strategies besides semantic, grammatical and pragmatic knowledge are often applied by native speakers. However, second language learners (L2 learners) are found facing difficulties in distinguishing words that have similar meanings. The near-synonyms of physical action verbs (PA Verbs) in Chinese for instance can be distinctive from each other in the way in which their actions are depicted, but in terms of semantic analysis and language acquisition,it is not an easy task to identify the nuances among them (Gao 2009).Gaos (2001a,b,c) work has provided different sub-classes of physical action verbs and its semantic decomposition method.Gaos (2009) work presents a computer-facilitated distinguishing system for Chinese near-synonyms.L2 learners can appreciate the nuances among near-synonyms by the system. After thoroughly studying the theory of Gaos system based on her work we present a more perfect computerfacilitated distinguishing system for near-synonyms of Chinese PA Verbs. We carry out further research on some aspects of her work, which helps L2 learners to master different subclasses of PA Verbs in Chinese from multi-angle perspectives.
