An Online GIS System for Transportation Planning

Traditional transportation planning methods often fail to address the accessibility issues of the concerned areas.Accessibility mapping can be used for quantitatively allocate limited resources to guarantee social equity.It is a major criterion to help planners to identify transportation inequity in a region so that corresponding measures can be taken during planning process.An online equity mapping generation system based on an online GIS is presented in this paper.It enables public participation and provides opportunities for normal citizens to submit important information and express concerns about their daily transportation needs and troubles.Mechanism of the prototype system is presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.Impacts of the online participatory approach on social equity, privacy and other issues are discussed as well.
