Comparison Between Continuous and Discrete Absorption Weighting for Monte Carlo Modeling Photon Transport in Tissue
Monte Carlo method was frequently used to provide flexible and rigorous estimates of photon migration in turbid media in the field of biomedical optics. Most researchers prefer discrete (DAW) to continuous absorption weighting (CAW), but few quantitative comparisons have been provided. We picked out the widely used Monte Carlo software MCML which was also based on DAW, and developed it to CAW-based MCML. By using typical biological tissue layer with multiple depth, we computed light transport properties with the above two method and compared them on time consumption and precision. Finally, we found that CAW showed more than twice precision than DAW in depth< 1 mm tissue and took less than 5% extral time consumption. Thus, DAW is recommend to use in analyzing light transport in depth< 1 mm biological sample in optical microscopy.
