Image Acquisition with Universal Cameras based on VideoCapX and Lab VIEW

At present, it is not universal for cameras programming in NI LabVTEW, and not all brands and types cameras can be supported by NI VISION development module. To overcome such shortcomings, one method of driving commonly used cameras for image acquisition in LabVIEW is presented. Image acquisition is realized by calling VideoCapX component in LabVIEW 8.2. With interface conversion programming, the RGB data of the obtained images can be extracted online and converted to image arrays and other data formats that compatible with MATLAB and NI VISION IMAQ, so that MATLAB and NI VISION TOOLKIT can be adopted for further image processing and analysis. The software was developed by using queue synchronous technique to ensure the real-time image acquisition and data processing; the principle and the method of the realization of image acquisition and image format conversion were detailed introduced. Finally, an experimental test of image acquisition for driving different brands of digital cameras was conducted, and the result showed that the method is universal for many brands of USB digital cameras in current market. Images can be obtained in real time and converted to other image data formats for display, so that other algorithms and toolkits for image processing can be integrated with LabVIEW for functions extension and advanced image processing.
