Research Progress on Melatonin Receptor in Poultry

A melatonin receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) which binds melatonin. Three types of melatonin receptor have been cloned. The MT1 (or MellA or MTNR1A) and MT2 (or Mell B or MTNR1B) receptor subtypes are present in humans and other mammals, while an additional melatonin receptor subtype MT3 (or MellC or MTNR1C) has been identified in amphibia and birds. The hormone melatonin is secreted primarily from the pineal gland, with highest levels occurring during the dark period of a circadian cycle. This hormone, through an action in the brain, appears to be involved in the regulation of various neural and endocrine processes that are cued by the daily change in photoperiod. This article reviews the research progress on melatonin receptor in poultry.
