LONG-TERM WIRELESS MONITORING SYSTEMS FOR THE MONITORING OF LONG-SPAN BRIDGES
There is a growing need for cost-effective sensing technologies that can be deployed to monitor the behavior and condition of bridge structures. In particular, long-span bridges represent a particularly challenging environment for most sensing technologies given both their size and often harsh operational environments. This paper reports on the development of a new generation of wireless monitoring systems that combine wireless sensor networks with cyber infrastructure tools to create a low-cost and easy to install monitoring system for long-span bridges. The design of the monitoring system can be delineated in two halves; wireless sensor network and Internet-enabled cyberenvironment. The wireless sensor network consists of individual Narada wireless sensing nodes spatially distributed across the bridge to monitor both bridge behavior (e. g. , acceleration, strain, displacements) and environment (e. g. , temperature, wind speed, wind direction, humidity). The wireless sensors are organized into sub-networks with wireless sensor measurements communicated to the sub-network base stations. Each base station locally logs data and communicates the data using cellular modems to a powerful database system termed SenStore that is remotely located on the Internet. To validate the proposed wireless monitoring system, the system is permanently installed on the New Carquinez (Alfred Zampa Memorial) Suspension Bridge located in Vallejo, CA. The paper will present examples of data collected by the wireless monitoring system deployed on the New Carquinez Bridge in addition to modal analysis results conducted using the bridge acceleration data. The system is proven to be both reliable and to provide high-resolution measurement data for more sophisticated engineering analyses.
