BRIDGE DEFLECTION MONITORING USING ACCELERATION MEASUREMENTS
Deflection profile of a bridge is important for its safety evaluation during normal operation time. It is a major indicator reflecting the global behavior of a bridge and a base to evaluate deterioration. Although a direct measurement of bridge deflection can be obtained, it may not always be feasible for certain applications due to its rather sophisticated instrumentation. On the other hand, accelerations can be easily and reliably measured by accelerometers. In this study, a method based on internal model Kalman filtering is proposed to estimate bridge deflection using only acceleration measurements. The internal model incorporated here is established by using some modal properties of the bridges, i. e. natural frequencies, mode shapes, etc. , which can be identified via modal testing techniques. Thus, it represents the constitutional relationship between the deflections to be estimated and the measured accelerations. Then, the Kalman filtering approach is utilized to estimate the displacements of the bridge. A numerical example of a simply supported beam is served to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. Its error analyses and robustness evaluation are further carried out under different measurement noise levels.
