COMMENTS ON THE MICROPLANE MODELS FOR CONCRETE

The microplane theory is a class of general approach to develop a complex three-dimensional material constitutive law. Though it has been successfully applied to many engineering materials, it is still an open issue to improve the theoretical aspect and numerical performances of the microplane theory. In this paper the previous microplane models for concrete were investigated mainly with respect to the homogenization formulation, the thermodynamical consistency, and the numerical performances under uniaxial tensile and compression. It is found that all the existing microplane models have problems of one sort or another. We also suggest a feasible approach to develop a new microplane model in which all the problems are removed.
