DURABILITY OF WET LAY-UP FRP COMPOSITES AND THEIR EXPOXY REINS IN ALKALINE ENVIRONMENT
This paper reports the durability test results of FRP composites and the corresponding epoxy rein under the effect of alkaline corrosion. Three types of wet layup FRP composites (GFRP/CFRP/BFRP) and typical epoxy reins were used in the tests to compare their resistance to alkaline corrosion. Toughening agent was used in the test to enhance the durability of epoxy rein. Test specimens were subjected to up to 9 weeks in alkaline solution with the temperature of 251 and 551. Test results show that (1) CFRP sheet perform better than GFRP and/or BFRP sheets in alkali environment; (2) high temperature accelerates the corrosion speed of both FRP and epoxy rein specimens; (3) the toughened epoxy rein specimens showed a better alkaline resistance than the un-toughened ones; (4) the degradation of fiber-epoxy rein interface is the prime cause of the deterioration of FRP composite in alkaline environment. Test data provides the basis for a fundamental understanding of deteriorative mechanisms that could be used for purposes of future reliability and service-life estimation.
