A MECHANICAL ANALOGY TO ELECTROMAGNETIC SHUNT DAMPER
Electromagnetic shunt damper (EMSD) is composed of an electromagnetic damper connected to one or more RLC shunt circuits. It is a promising damping device for structural multi-mode vibration control, which can operate in either passive or semi-active way. Through theoretical, numerical and experimental study, this paper reveals the similarity and difference between the EMSD and the conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) ,both of which can be resonant vibration absorbers. The equivalent mass, stiffness and damping coefficient of the EMSD are derived based on the transfer functions. A comparative study clearly demonstrates that the EMSD and the TMD have very close control performance for single-mode vibration suppression. Slight difference in the transfer functions is also pointed out,and its effect on the optimal design and control performance is evaluated. The results indicate that the TMD is a good mechanical analogy to the novel EMSD. As the application of conventional TMD in structural vibration suppression has been extensively studied in the past, such an analogy would shed the light on the analysis and design of the EMSD and facilitate the understanding and acceptance of this novel damping device by civil engineering society.
