VERTICAL RANDOM RESPONSES OF A VEHICLE WITH VARIABLE SPEED TRAVELING OVER A BRIDGE

Pseudo-excitation method (PEM) is extended to compute the responses of vehicles with variable speed traveling over a bridge. To date, the random responses of a vehicle traveling over a bridge with constant speed has been studied, especially that the application of PEM combined with the Precise Integration Method (PIM) has considerably improved the computation accuracy and efficiency. However, when the vehicle travels with variable speed, the random excitations due to the surface irregularity applied to the coupled vehicle-bridge system are nonstationary which brings great difficulty to the random response analysis of the system. This problem is investigated in this paper based on PEM,in which the vehicle is modeled as a spring-mass-damper system with 10 degrees of freedom and the bridge is regarded as a finite element Euler-Bernoulli beam. In the numerical example, the cases of a vehicle traveling with different accelerations or suddenly changing its speed are studied; meanwhile the responses of the vehicle traveling with constant and variable speeds are compared.
