Vertical Vibration Analysis of Footbridges under Dynamic Pedestrian Loading with Parameter Variability

Vibration serviceability check has been becoming an important issue increasingly in the design of modern footbridges, which are characterized by light weight and low damping , as well as great flexibility as a result of meeting functional requirements for large spanning. Numerical simulations regarding footbridge response to dynamic vertical pedestrian loadings are carried out consider ing human footbridge interaction ,and the population and individual variability of walking parameters are also taken into account to evaluate the effects of stochastic nature of walking parameters on dy -namic response. The stepping length and stepping frequency are taken as random parameters. The results from three models, namely stochastic walking model, semi-stochastic model and deterministic model, were compared thoroughly. It suggested that variability in stepping length has little influence on dynamic response of footbridge while the variability in stepping frequency affects appreciably the modal response of the studied footbridge. The deterministic model without considering any parame -ter variability,as currently adopted in many codes of practice ,are either conservative or lack of appropriate safety margins, depending on the ratio of pacing rate and natural frequency of footbridge. The approach is served as the first step into the improvement on response spectrum for footbridge vi -bration design under investigation.
