Affective Dimension of Public Service Motivation (Compassion) and Job Satisfaction: Evidence of Social Works from China

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) techniques are applied to survey of Chinese social workers to investigate the generalisability of the affective dimension of public service motivation (compassion) from the western society in Chinese context. The paper also examines its effects on job satisfaction. This study finds the affective dimension does exist in Chinese social workers but the factorial structure of the original measurement instrument is split into negatively and positively phrased items in place. Further analysis indicates the shortened scale including four negative items is the best solution and has a marginally positive relationship to the job satisfaction of social workers.
