An Early Pedestrian Flow Warning Method Based on Cross Section Bi-Directional Flow Ratio-Error Analysis
With the quick urbanization process, the crowd gathering at public places of cities is frequently seen. The excessively crowded public space presents many potential risks, sometimes leading to huddle and stampede upon various sudden occurrences. The business street is the typical area with high pedestrian flow, and some large business streets, e.g. Huaqiang Road North in Shenzhen, Xidan Street in Beijing, etc. have the daily pedestrian flow as high as hundreds of thousands, also showing the risk of huddle and stampede. The timely warning for the potential danger of the high pedestrian flow is an important measure for the pedestrian flow safety management. The study is intended to put forward an early warning method for risks of crowd gathering based on the cross section bi-directional flow ratio, according to the characteristics of the opposite movement of the pedestrian flow at the business street, focusing on analysis of the error of the method. Two scenarios were verified with the actual examples considering the causes giving rise to the error of the existing pedestrian flow statistic tools, and the results showed the errors can be offset with the cross section bi-directional flow ratio to some extent, which can be used as the ideal criterion for the pedestrian flow warning in the engineering applications. The results can be used for reference for the risk warning of crowd gathering, to avoid occurrence of huddle and stampede in the excessively crowded public space.
