Simulation of Evacuation Process in a Supermaket with Cellular Automata

The evacuation process in a supermarket is simulated by a two-dimensional Cellular Automata (CA) model in this paper. The interactions among people and those between people and obstacles in evacuation route are considered in CA model, and the Danger-degree concept is introduced to solve the path selection of peoples evacuation process. This paper studies the effect of different shelves orientation and personal familiarity degree with exits to evacuation time. The result shows that the shelves orientations have little influence on evacuation time when occupants are fewer; but when people density in supermarket is large, the longitudinal shelves orientation is more appropriate for evacuation. The study also found that the evacuation time reduced with the increase of personal familiarity with exits because the utilization of safety exits are enhanced, and the evacuation process could be optimized by inducing occupants move out from safety exits.
