A Modified Process for Spherical 2-Diazo-4,6-Dinitrophenol(DDNP) Synthesis
2-Diazo-4,6-dinitrophenol(DDNP) is a primary explosive and is usually used for detonating cords, blasting caps, and gun primers. At Hanwha Corporation, spherical DDNP has been manufacturing and using since a modified synthesis method was developed and patented in 1999. By this method, needle-like DDNP crystals were precipitated and simultaneously they were agglomerated into spherical particles. This method has improved flowability, bulk density, and sensitivity of DDNP. In this study, we studied the factors that would influence the characteristics of the spherical DDNP synthesized. Moreover, we modified a synthesis method to enhance the properties of the final products. The DDNP crystals synthesized by the modified method showed the spherical morphology and the mean size of 350 m. In addition, the properties of the final products were examined ? ined by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR) and Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC). Any impurity was not detected by HPLC and NMR analysis, and the characteristics of DDNP were identified by FT-IR analysis. The impact sensitivity(H50) was 24.48cm, which was measured with 1kg weight.
