Synthesis of 2,3-Dimethyl-2,3-Dinitrobutane Crystals: As a Chemical Detector in Explosives

Addition of a trace amount of some organic compounds as a chemical detector into the explosives has been common in military industries in the recent years. Among the well known chemical detectors 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMDNB) because of high chemical stability, low toxicity, compatibility with explosive materials and a trustworthy detection is more important than the others. Synthesis of DMDNB via a simple and economic method is the main aim of the work. DMDNB is prepared from the reaction of 2-nitropropane in the presence of a solution of iodine in ethanol. This is a new and efficient method for the synthesis of DMDNB on the bench scale.
