Preparation and Characterization of Zirconium Composite Particles with Reduced Electrostatic Discharge Sensitivity
Zirconium powder is a powerful metal incendiary agent in energetic materials, however, the electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity of Zr powder is very high. It is easy spontaneous combustion and explosion in air. In this paper, zirconium composite particles with reduced electrostatic discharge sensitivity were prepared by coating with HTPB. Zr/HTPB composite particles are characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TG-DSC and ESD. The results show that zirconium powders are successfully coated with HTPB. The ESD of Zr powders coated with HTPB is decreased from 5.58×10-4J (P=50 percent) to 3.12×10-3J (P=50 percent). HTPB has no large effect on the thermal properties of Zr powder and AP.
