Technology of Micro/Nano-Particle Formation of HMX Using Supercritical CO2

Micro/nano-particle of energy materials hans considerable more rapidly energy release than conventional materials. The formation of micro/nano-particle of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX) in acetone solution using supercritical carbon dioxide antisolvent (GAS) recrystallization and two-phase unite atomization were studied and scanning electronic microscopy, differemtial scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and infrared radiation were used to examine particle size, crystal, meltting point and chemical structure. The results show that β-HMX micro/nano-particle in different average size(5.2 μm to 174 nm) and with narrow size distribution were obtained by controlling the expansibility, expansion speed, initial concentration of HMX, temperature and pressure during the processes. The formation of nuclei may be a main consumption mechanism of supersaturation when the solution is expanded rapidly enough or atomized by nozzle , in which narrow size distribution of micro/nano-particle can be obtained.
