Improvement of Thermal Decomposition Properties of Ammonium Perchlorate Particles by Using Some Polymer Coating Agents

Despite advantageous of Ammonium Perchlorate (AP), as a solid state oxidant, including the high content of oxygen and leaving no solid residue upon reaction, its consecutive thermal decomposition process occurring at a wide temperature range is still problematic. This research aimed to investigate the optimum condition for modification of thermal decomposition properties of AP particles through microencapsulation techniques. DSC/TG and SEM have been exploited to investigate the thermal properties, heat of decomposition and coating morphology of samples. Our primarily evolutions have been shown that although AP microparticle could be effectively coated with NC and viton A, but a significant loss of heat of decomposition occurs with the latter one, so NC was preferred as a alternative coating agents to further investigate its effectiveness in AP microencapsulation and to optimize the parameters affecting on this process. The results shown, the first stage decomposition temperature of NC coated samples increases about 12 ℃ with respect to uncoated sample and reaches to 305℃ at proposed optimum conditions. Also, the apparent activation parameters of the decomposition processes of the samples were verified by ASTM and Ozawa methods. Finally, the results of this investigation showed that microencapsulation of AP particles with fibrous NC, enhancing the heat of decomposition (~120 J/g) without obviously effect on kinetic parameters and thermal decomposition temperature.
