Effects of Co Nanoparticles on Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Dinitramide

The monodispersed Co nanoparticles were prepared by means of hydrogen arc plasma method in inert atmosphere. The particle size, specific surface area, crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET equation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the corresponding selected area electron diffraction (SAED). To study their catalytic property, Co nanoparticles on the decomposition of ammonium dinitramide (AND) have been investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Compared with the thermal decomposition of pure AND, the addition of Co nanoparticles (2 wt%, 5 wt%) decreases the decomposition on temperature of AND by12.82℃ and 21.35℃.Also the Co nanoparticles make the apparent decomposition heat of Co/AND composition increase obviously. These phenomena indicated that the Co nanoparticles have very excellent catalytic activity to AND.
