Detonation Properties of Emulsion Explosive in Different Confinements —1 Critical Parameters of Detonation

Several critical parameters of a steady-state detonation of ammonium nitrate-based emulsion with density of 1.21 g/cm3 are measured, namely: a critical diameter, a critical detonation velocity, particle velocity time profile and detonation wave front curvature in critical conditions. All these parameters were determined for confinements of three material types: paper, concrete and steel. Charges with the length of up to 30 diameters were used to confirm the absence of a detonation failure on long distances from the point of initiation. The data obtained showed, that critical detonation parameters can not be determined correctly if this question is disregarded. The values of critical detonation diameter can be 2 times lower than the real values, and the values of critical velocity can be -in 1.5 times lower. Also it was shown that the material of a confinement strongly influenced the critical diameter and the radius front curvature. Other critical parameters practically do not depend on properties of a confinement.
