Detonation Properties of Emulsion Explosive in Different Confinements —2 Charge Diameter Dependencies

Detonation properties of ammonium nitrate-based emulsion explosive with the density of 1.21 g/cm3 were investigated. Detonation velocity, particle velocity temporal profiles and detonation wave front curvatures were measured as a function of charge diameter. All these parameters were determined for confinements of three material types: paper, concrete and steel. Good linear relationships between measured detonation velocity and the reciprocal charge diameter were observed at small differences between critical and ideal values for each confinement. In relative coordinates all the data were described with good precision by a single linear equation with a single linear coefficient. It was found that the same conclusions were also correct for particle velocities. Measured particle velocity temporal profiles were characterized by a presence of chemical spikes in all cases. A weak dependence of chemical reaction zone duration on charge diameter and confinement was also observed. Several other important relationships between detonation parameter of emulsion explosive were also obtained.
