Research of Triethylaluminium Explosion

The explosion test of 1.8kg triethylaluminium with air and water was done in the field, and compared with the explosion of pure explosive column with the same mass. In test, the high-speed photography was used to record the whole processes of exploding, and the pressure sensor was used to record overpressure data two to three meters away from the explosion center. It was observed by the high-speed photography that triethylaluminium was burning and dispersing in air at a maximum dispersion speed of 27m/s, while it was mixed with water, the dispersion speed reached 60m/s. The contrast test of triethylaluminium explosion was performed in two cases of 50L and 30L water. The test result shows that appropriately increasing quantity and diameter of water facilitates detonation. The fireball of triethylaluminium explosion has long duration which reaches 2000ms in the air. In the explosion, the reaction of an earlier period is approximately detonation. The duration of fireball is 100ms for explosion in water, and the reaction is deflagration process. The duration of fireball is 20ms for the pure explosive. The explosion overpressure in air is 40% higher than in water, and is 23% higher than that of the pure explosive column. The experimental results show that triethylaluminium can form detonation and long duration fireball in the air and water. After the test ended, the clear deformation of aluminum basin could be seen, which indicated overpressure occurred in the process of reaction between triethylaluminium and water.
