Experimental Evaluation of Carbon-Carbon Nozzle Inserts for Low-thrust, Long-duration Motors

This paper describes the design and experiment to evaluate the carbon-carbon nozzle inserts for low-thrust, long-duration solid rocket motor applications. The 300-N, 200-s motor using carbon-carbon insert was tested with great success. The transient value of the throat diameter was obtained from the pressure and thrust measurements. It is indicated that the throat experiences four phases as initial deposition, deposition melt, continuous erosion, erosion alternating with deposition; the throat erosion is the main limiting factor for the motor advancement. The effect of chamber pressure on the throat erosion and deposition was also investigated. The chamber pressure to ensure motor stable operation was suggested.
