Experimental Study on the Hazards of Continuous Wave to Exploding Foil

In order to assess the safety and reliability of the exploding foil initiator (EFI) in continuous electromagnetic wave, the direct current (DC) damage threshold of an exploding foil, which dimensions are 0.4×0.4mm with 0.0045mm of thickness, was tested. The temperature rising curve of the copper bridge area was recorded by the infrared thermal imaging system. The induced current of the exploding foil in the continuous sine wave was tested by Rogowski coil current sensor. Results show that the DC damage threshold of the exploding copper foil is 3.15A, and the damage of low DC current to the copper bridge is Joule heating effect, and that there is a linear relationship between the induced current and field intensity at the sensitive frequency. The safety and reliability of the EFI was assessed by comparing the virtual value of induced current in continuous wave and the DC damage threshold of the exploding copper foil. The result shows that the EFI has a higher safety and reliability in continuous sine wave.
